Pros and cons of buying a static caravan | New v Used
Buying a static caravan is a big decision, and there's much more to consider than just how much money you want to spend, although this will of course influence your decision.
Just like buying a car, there are pros and cons to buying new or used when it comes to static caravans, and we'll do our best to discuss your options here;
Buying a used static caravan
If you're buying your first static caravan budget is likely to be your first consideration, and buying used is usually the most cost-effective option, but you may also be unsure of all of your requirements in terms of layout until you begin to use your static caravan. If you later decide that a different model may suit you better, it will be less costly to carry out any alterations or to trade-in for a different model if you buy a used static caravan.
Many used static caravans can be purchased in ‘as new’ condition for a fraction of the price of a new unit, however, in the event of any issues they are less likely to be covered under a manufacturers warranty.
You're also likely to find a greater variety of layouts if you buy a used static caravan, as older layouts are continuously replaced with new ones.
Plus, there's a greater opportunity to decorate and personalise a used static caravan to suit your own taste.
The pros of buying a used static caravan
- Value for money
- Choice of layouts
- Opportunity to personalise
The cons of buying a used static caravan
- No, or limited, warranty.
- Dated fixtures or fittings - Read our top tips to modernise your static caravan
- More maintenance may be required.

Buying a new static caravan
Buying a new static caravan is an attractive option for many reasons; all new static caravans will come with a full manufacturer's warranty, so you won't have to worry about untidy finishes or faulty appliances. Absolutely everything is shiny, new and unused by anybody else!
And if gadgets are your thing, new static caravans are more likely to be equipped with the latest technology such as blue tooth lounge ceiling speakers and USB plugs and charging stations.
You may also find that the heating system is more effective in new units, saving on costs in the long-run.
However, if you're looking for a good financial investment, buying new is not a sensible option. Just like buying a car, static caravans do not increase in value. Use your new static caravan, enjoy it and build cherished memories, but don't expect it to make you any money!
The pros of buying a new static caravan
- Manufacturer's warranty
- Brand new, unused fixtures and fittings
- The latest tech and appliances
The cons of buying a new static caravan
- Depreciation

This April, we completed our first Million Mile Clean, collecting 11 sacks of litter over 2 miles. And this September, we're doing it all over again, but this time, we're adding in an extra mile! Providing a clean and attractive destination for our visitors to enjoy not only benefits our business, it also positively impacts our local community and the wider environment. Which is why we have committed to join Surfers Against Sewage Million Mile Clean for the second time. Now the biggest initiative of its kind in the UK, the Million Mile Clean is an annual event, mobilising 1,000,000 million volunteers to clean over 10,000,000 miles of UK landscape between 2021 - 2030. It’s reported that more than 2 million pieces of litter are dropped in the UK every day at a cost of £1 billion to the taxpayer. So, we are asking visitors and the local community to get pro-active and join us at Riverside Holiday Village near Weston-super-Mare on Thursday 11th September from 10.00am - 1.00pm for an organised 3 mile ‘litter pick’ along Bridgwater Road (Uphill Beach - Hospital Roundabout - Hobbs Boat Inn). ‘Clean Kits’ will be provided; we’re just asking for 3 hours of your time to help clean up this public space.
